How to Cook a Steak on a Pellet Grill.
Imagine sinking your teeth into a perfectly cooked, juicy steak infused with the smoky goodness of your pellet grill. While pellet grills are often associated with low and slow cooking, they're equally adept at delivering quick, restaurant-quality steaks.
For this recipe you need a cast iron skillet, seasonings, and a stick of butter. This is a great dinner idea that hardly requires any preparation time. It's a hot and fast cook that will make your steaks juicy, buttery, and melt in your mouth delicious. It's a nice change up for your pellet grill instead of a low and slow cook. Have your dinner on the table in thirty minutes or less. Follow the basis of the recipe and use seasonings you like.
There are other ways to cook your steak on a pellet grill such as reverse sear, or just grill it. A reverse sear would be to cook at lower temperature then crank up the heat and get a sear. I love the flavor this method produces. You know it's a great flavorful steak when no A1 sauce or other condiment is needed. Round up your cast iron skillet and fire up the grill.
For this recipe I cooked an Angus Top Sirloin Steak. Feel free to use whatever cut of steak you prefer. Grocery store prices are soaring, and this is an inexpensive cut of meat that tase delicious.

How to make juicy steak on pellet grill.
Take the steaks out of the refrigerator at least 30 minutes before grilling to allow it to come to room temperature. This ensures even cooking. Pat the steak dry with a paper towel to help achieve a beautiful sear. Apply Olive oil as a binder. Season liberally with your favorite steak rub or a simple mix of salt and pepper. I use Killer Hogs AP seasoning. Don't be afraid to be generous on your seasoning. Feel free to also add rosemary or thyme as well when you are preparing your steaks.
Start off by placing the empty cast iron skillet in your pellet grill. Set the temperature to 450°. Once cast iron is hot and your grill has reached 450 degrees, add a stick of unsalted butter to the cast iron skillet. Using unsalted butter will not burn your butter like salted will.
How long to cook steak on pellet grill?
While butter is melting in your skillet place your steak directly on the grill grates for approximately five minutes with lid closed. Now place the steak in cast iron skillet and cook to your desired temperature. Approximately 5-7 minutes for medium rare. Baste the steak in butter when you flip it once through the cook. Pull the steak off the grill when you reach your desired internal temperature and cover in foil tent. Remember your steak continues to cook once it is taken off the grill.
Use your Digital meat thermometer to check internal temperatures.
Steak Level of Doneness by Internal Temperature
Rare 120°
Medium rare 130°
Medium 140°
Medium well 150°
Well done 160° - I'm sorry we can't be friends. 🤣
Resting and Slicing:
Let the steak rest for 5-10 minutes, tented with foil. This allows the juices to redistribute. Slice your juicy perfectly cooked steak against the grain for maximum tenderness.
Enjoy your pellet grilled steak. Pair your grilled steak with your favorite sides like garlic mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a crisp salad. Consider adding a pat of compound butter or a drizzle of balsamic reduction for an extra layer of flavor.
Grilling a juicy steak on your pellet grill doesn't have to be a time-consuming endeavor. With the right cut, proper preparation, and a quick sear followed by gentle grilling, you can achieve steakhouse-quality results at home in no time. So, fire up your pellet grill and get ready to enjoy a fast and easy steak that's bursting with flavor. Your taste buds will thank you.
