Review of Pit Boss 820 Competition Series Pellet Grill

If you're a barbecue enthusiast, you're probably aware that the right grill can make all the difference in creating mouthwatering, smoky masterpieces. Pit Boss is a name that resonates with grilling aficionados, and in this in-depth review, we'll explore why this grill is creating waves in the world of pellet grills. The Pit Boss 820 Competition Series Pellet Grill is 8 in 1, it will smoke, bake, roast, braise, sear, grill, BBQ, and char-grill.

This is not the 850 Series but the 820 Competition Series, I purchased this grill from a big box lumber store. This grill features 849 square inches of cooking surface and is easy to use, and easy to maintain. After owning for over a year I can say I have not had one single problem with it. I have cooked everything from veggies, pasta, soups, pizza and every cut of meat you can think of. I have completed long cooks like pork shoulder, and I have done French pizza in about 15 minutes. This grill comes up to temperature quicky and stays consistent.

Unboxing and Assembly

The Pit Boss 820 arrives in a well-packaged box, and assembly is surprisingly straightforward, even for those who aren't seasoned DIYers. With clear instructions and labeled components, you'll have your grill ready to go in no time. It's a bonus for those who want to get to grilling without the hassle of complicated assembly.

Design and Build Quality

The first impression of the Pit Boss 820 is its robust build. It's a sturdy grill that doesn't wobble or feel flimsy. The grill grates are coated with porcelain, making them easy to clean and preventing food from sticking. The entire unit is built to last, and you can tell it's designed for serious grilling.

Pit Boss Cooking Performance

Now, let's get to the heart of the matter: How does the Pit Boss 820 perform when it comes to cooking? The answer is - exceptionally well. The 849 square inches of cooking space provide ample room to grill or smoke a variety of foods. It's a versatile grill that can handle everything from slow-smoking brisket to searing steaks at high temperatures.

One of the standout features is the digital control panel, which allows precise temperature control. You can set the temperature and let the grill do the rest. The grill's PID controller maintains the desired temperature within a few degrees, ensuring consistent and reliable results. The grills temperature holds steady, and you have the convenience to open the sear plate with a lever if you want to grill with direct heat. Temperature can be set from 180 to 500 degrees, and adjustable in five-degree increments.

What is Pit Boss Warranty?

You also get great peace of mind from Pit Boss with their five-year manufacturer's warranty. I think at the time I purchased this grill it was around the $550 price range.

Pit Boss Pellet System

The Pit Boss 820 relies on a pellet system that imparts a smoky flavor to your food. It uses natural hardwood pellets, allowing you to experiment with different wood flavors to enhance your dishes. The hopper can hold up to twenty-one pounds of pellets. Just make sure you pull the grates out and vacuum out the bottom of grill and fire box after every four to five cooks. I also take out broiler plate and scrape off any grease or cooked on residue.

Pit Boss 820 Additional Features

The Pit Boss 820 comes with a range of features that add to its convenience, including a meat probe, ceramic coated grill grates, a side shelf, and a lower storage shelf. The side shelf is especially handy for keeping your grilling tools and ingredients close at hand. It also comes with Bluetooth and Wi Fi capability so you can use the Pit Boss phone app. The app is super handy and lets you control grill temperature and monitor your internal meat temperature right from your phone. Pit Boss makes it easy to change pellets with door on the back of the hopper.
